This article aims to clarify the problem of including the “intention to deceive” in the definition of a lie and to propose a new definition that supplements it. To this end, the first step is to investigate the widely accepted problem of establishing a lie, which is “intentionally saying something false.” Under this definition, unintentional falsehoods, such as incorrect answers from ChatGPT, incorrect responses to descriptive questions, and medical misdiagnoses, are not considered lies, and the issue of false confessions cannot be adequately addressed. Next, to avoid the problem of Umberto Eco’s interpretation, this article delves into the meaning of Chinese characters related to the Korean words for “lie” and “lies.” The findings are then synthesized based on a philosophical analysis of the nature of language. By examining the phrase “this forsythia is yellow,” the article analyzes it in terms of the dimensions of “outside of words,” “inside of words,” and “what is meant to be said.” It demonstrates that lies originate from the “false association” of these three dimensions. In conclusion, the article proposes that the new definition of a lie should be “the false decoration of the outside-inside of words and what is meant to be said.”
