초록

The purpose of this paper is to clarify what kind of transformation in the image of Seodang, known as a traditional educational institution, has undergone since modern times. Often, Seodang is a preparatory education facility for advancing to Hyanggyo and Seongkyunkwan, and is known as a facility that provides elementary education. However, it can be said that this image were not originally like this, but were created after modern times. To prove this, this study examines how the meaning of Seodang has spread to academic circles based on the writings published so far, and analyzes the images of Seodang recognized by Japanese education officials and colonial authorities before and after Japanese colonial era. In this process, the meaning of Seodang, which has been widely distributed in academia so far, became clear. And this image was created by Japanese education officials or colonial authorities before and after Japanese colonial era, and continued to be used without a critical review since 1945. This paper will not only contribute to publicizing the need to redefine the meaning of Seodang, but will also provide an opportunity to reflect on how the educational legacy of the Colonial era that still exists more than 70 years after 1945.
