초록

The incense is the most basic tool of offering to Buddha, Therefore, after the introduction of Buddhism, East Asia used mainly incense during Buddhist ceremony. In the various historical records related to the Silla period, references to 'incense' appeared in the record after the introduction of Buddhism. In Silla, incense was recognized as a symbol of Buddhism. At first, only the king, monks and nobles were used to treat Buddhist ceremony and illnesses. However, as the Silla people's belief in Buddhism spreads, the desire to engage in faith activities using incense has increased. Especially after the 8th century, various classes of people were able to perform faith activities. This change gradually led to a shift in the perception of 'incense'. The Silla people used incense not only in Buddhist ceremony but also in daily life through various methods. Buddhism is also a new culture beyond religion. The introduction of Buddhism continued with the introduction of new culture. As Buddhism flourished, scents were widely used. Furthermore, incense could be used in everyday life. The expansion of culture that enjoyed the incense beyond the meaning of the symbol of Buddhist faith appeared in Tang and Japan. Therefore, this cultural phenomenon shows the universality of ancient East Asian culture.
