The Effects of Affectual Solidarity with the Resident Parent and Feeling Caught on Psychological Well-Being among Emerging Adult Children from Divorced Families: Gender of the Resident Parent and Child

초록

Objectives: This study aims to examine the effects of affectual solidarity with the resident parent and feeling caught on the psychological well-being of emerging adult children from divorced families, and to analyze how these effects differ according to the gender combination of resident parent and child. Method: The participants were 474 unmarried emerging adults aged 20 to 34 who experienced parental divorce before the age of 18 and currently live with the resident parent who served as their primary caregiver. Data were analyzed using SPSS 26.0 and R 4.2.2. Results: First, in the overall sample, affectual solidarity had a positive effect on psychological well-being, while feeling caught had a negative effect. Second, analysis of four groups (resident father-son, resident father-daughter, resident mother-son, resident mother-daughter) revealed that affectual solidarity showed a significant positive effect across all groups, whereas feeling caught had a significant negative effect only in the resident mother-daughter group. Third, the effect of affectual solidarity differed significantly between the resident mother-daughter and resident mother-son groups, and between the resident mother-son and resident father-daughter groups. Conclusions: This study is significant in that it extends the scope of research on the children of divorce to emerging adults and empirically verifies the effects of affectual solidarity with resident parents and feeling caught on psychological well-being. Furthermore, by confirming that these effects vary according to the gender combination of resident parents and children, this study establishes a foundation for understanding the adjustment of emerging adult children from divorced families from a more differentiated perspective.
