초록

The eradication processes of smallpox, that is, Mama, were deeply related with Mythology and Religionism, in which the aspect of clash with modern culture such as science and law was observed. This study concentrates on three subjects to investigate correlations between disease and civilization. First, this study tries to verify that Jennerization was enforced as the sign for modern mythification. The concept of Modernism with science has the signified to control the disease. As this Jennerization has been the only remedy to exterminate the smallpox among diseases, it can imply more influence on human civilization than other vaccinations for disease. Second, Shamanism and Confusionism to cope with smallpox have metaphorical properties. Shamanism was described as being a wrong set of values that was unscientific and superstitious. On the contrary, Confusionism was harmonized naturally in the semantic network of science and law, and absorbed aggressively into the positive meaning of right and cure to become politicised. Third, Various Gut in Shamanism encompassing Smallpox(Mama) was narrated as fraud and lie, moved away from positive tradition, and eventually faded away in demythification. Meanwhile, science and law as the name of modernism were considered to make a road to new mythification. The infectious disease in Korean modern culture will be the door that revivifies the problems of human and modernism. Diverging from an absolute viewpoint of ruling diseases, this study takes note of the new geography of modern culture, where an occurrence of disease resulted in civilization clash and newly re-mythified was the meaning of Religionism.
