The purpose of this study is to examine the structural relationship between career barriers, career adaptability, and planned happenstance skills of junior college students, and to verify the mediating effect of planned happenstance skills. To this end, data from 286 junior college students in Seoul and Gyeonggi were analyzed. The results are as follows. First, there was a statistically significant correlation between career barriers, planned happenstance skills, and career adaptability of junior college students. Second, career barriers of junior college students did not significantly affect career adaptability, while planned happenstance skills had a significant negative effect. Third, planned happenstance skills of junior college students had a significant positive effect on career adaptability. Fourth, as a result of verifying the mediating effect of planned happenstance skills in the relationship between career barriers and career adaptability of junior college students, it was found that career barriers had a complete mediating effect on career adaptability through planned happenstance skills. The results of this study imply that interventions that can promote the improvement of planned happenstance skills are the most important in helping junior college students successfully adapt to their careers. This study is significant in that it provides important implications for establishing intervention strategies to improve more effective career adaptability in career guidance and counseling for college students.
