The two theories that are most commonly used theories to describe the factors affecting xenophobia are contact theory and terror- management theory; this study examines which of these provides a better explanation of the phenomenon of xenophobia. For this purpose, data from 831 adolescents living in a metropolitan area were collected through surveys distributed in person at or by mail to high schools, religious organizations, and youth organizations in the Seoul metropolitan area from February 19 to March 26, 2018. The survey results were assessed with hierarchical regression analysis, with the following results. Prejudice against foreigners residing in South Korea mediated the relationship between multicultural experience and xenophobia. However, the same factor, prejudice against foreigners, partly mediated the relationship between death anxiety consciousness and xenophobia. In other words, multicultural consciousness had an indirect effect on xenophobia, and death anxiety had direct and indirect effects on it. This study’s results can be used to support development of measures to prevent social problems related to xenophobia by investigating the influence of each independent variable on xenophobia and the mediating effects of prejudice.
