초록

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz can be read as a story about freedom, and the narrative of this story has similarities to Exodus, an archetypal Biblical story about the oppression and freedom. Moses and Dorothy have different backgrounds but share a significant similarity, in that both protagonists free people who have been oppressed from their different kinds of oppression. The ‘evil’ of the wicked characters in OZ is mainly their desire to make other people their own slaves, and to exploit them for their own benefits. Dorothy’s main role is to continue to save people from different kinds of ‘bondage.’ The bondages are characterized as three types: freedom from external and physical oppression, freedom from an internalized fixed mindset, and freedom from deception and false identity. After achieving these types of freedom, one can also achieve the freedom of self-integrity. This journey to the ultimate freedom of self-integrity is the main theme of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and shows similar key aspects seen in Exodus.
