This study analyzed seven high school Chinese textbooks based on the 2022 revised curriculum. The focus was on how well the textbooks reflected curriculum competencies and supported learners’ self-directed learning. Most textbooks incorporated communication competence and digital literacy relatively well. Communication competence aimed to improve practical skills across various everyday topics and situations. Digital literacy helped enhance information comprehension and use through diverse media such as videos, charts, and online resources. However, communication competence showed limitations in expanding learners’ application skills because the topics and themes were repetitive. The emphasis on digital media led to excessive assignments, which may increase learners’ study burden. Some textbooks require improvement in fostering integrative thinking and creativity. Content and vocabulary generally met recommended standards, but balance in learning volume and content organization across textbooks was somewhat lacking. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen the alignment between the curriculum and textbooks. Diverse topics and themes should be developed, and measures to reduce learners’ study burden should be implemented.
