초록

In this article, the members of the Haedong Giro-hwae gathering of elders, organized by a person named Choi Dang(崔?) in the year 1203(6th year of King Shinjong’s reign), and their activities as well, are examined. Haedong Giro-hwae was a gathering arranged among literate elders, who retired from their senior governmental posts, and then decided to gather together to author and exchange poems over drink, as their own recreational activities. This particular gathering was composed of nine members, which included Choi Dang(who led the establishment of this gathering), his brother Choi Seon(崔詵), and other persons like Jang Yun Mun(張允文), Go Yeong Jung(高瑩中), Baek Gwang Shin(白光臣), Lee Jun Chang(李俊昌), Hyeon Deok Su(玄德秀), Lee Se Jang(李世長), and Jo Tong(趙通). And added to them, Park In Seok(朴仁碩) and Lee In Ro(李仁老) associated with those members as well. Most of the members were entities with extended capabilities in literature who were assigned to high-level governmental posts after Choi Chung Heon(崔忠獻) had risen to power, and many of them were in charge of overseeing the national examinations such as the Gukja-gam-shi(國子監試) and Yaebu-shi(禮部試) tests. The whole point of the Haedong Giro-hwae activities was to let the members enjoy themselves through parties and poem exchanges, yet the gathering was not entirely unrelated to politics of the time. It was a rather new form of elders gathering(for the retired officials’ recreational activities), as it was essentially a breakaway from the traditional and typical form of intra-personal relationship featured by medieval officials, which had been based upon familial relationships and the continuation of the national examination. Haedong Giro-hwae is the first type of elders gathering to be found in the Goryeo dynasty’s history, and it was also a gathering of which the members and activities can be verified with details. And it became the standard for other Giro-hwae gatherings that were formed in subsequent time periods.
