초록
Mimi Nagai’s The Sewing Machine and the Goldfish features an elderly woman with dementia as the first-person narrator, breaking the mold of conventional dementia narratives that focus on family suffering and caregiving. As both Japan and Korea are aging, dementia is emerging as a social issue rather than an individual problem, and the narratives of dementia in literature are changing accordingly. In the past, dementia patients were often portrayed as a source of pain and burden for their families, but in recent years, a growing number of works have focused on the views and feelings of the person with dementia. The Sewing Machine and the Goldfish is part of this new wave of dementia narratives, which emphasizes that people with dementia are still active agents in their lives. It portrays dementia as a way of life, not just a degeneration, and invites the reader to take a delicate look into its world.
