This study aimed to explore and analyze in depth the experiences of novice play therapists participating in group play therapy for the elderly. Five play therapists with less than three years of professional experience participated in Focus Group Interviews, and the collected data were analyzed using the Consensual Qualitative Research method. The analysis yielded six core domains and thirteen categories. Key experiences included a shift in motivation from initial involuntary participation to expectations for expanding therapeutic domains and enhancing professional competence, the formation of positive relationships with older adults, observation of therapeutic changes, and the discovery of effective interventions. Major challenges identified in the therapeutic process involved individual differences in cognitive functioning and activity pace among older adults, as well as physical limitations and safety concerns. In comparison with child play therapy, participants clearly articulated the distinctive characteristics of play therapy for the elderly, such as the need for increased structure and restricted activity scope, and they expressed suggestions for program improvement, recognition of the need to expand play therapy for the elderly, strong intentions to re-participate, and a sense of professional differentiation. Additionally, participants reported growth as play therapists, including the expansion of professional competencies, personal growth and transformation, and the development of therapeutic relationship-building skills. These findings provide important foundational data for the education and training of play therapists to support the expansion of play therapy for older adults.
