A Longitudinal Relationship Between Career Preparation Competency and Grit Among Multicultural Adolescents: The Influence of Migrant Mothers’ Sociocultural Resources

This study examined the longitudinal relationship between career preparation competency and grit among multicultural adolescents, focusing on the role of migrant mothers’ sociocultural resources. Using Waves 5 (2023) and 6 (2024) of the second cohort of the Multicultural Adolescents Panel Study, data from 1,762 cases for latent profile analysis and 1,693 cases for longitudinal analysis were analyzed through latent profile analysis, R3STEP, Bolck-Croon-Hagenaars (BCH) mean comparison, hierarchical regression, and bootstrap mediation analysis. Three profiles of mothers’ sociocultural resources were identified: low-engagement (85.1%), moderate-engagement (11.2%), and high-concentration (3.6%). Mothers’ educational attainment strongly predicted profile membership, whereas country-of-origin differences were statistically significant but small in effect size. Career preparation competency differed significantly across profiles, but grit did not. Wave 5 career preparation competency positively predicted Wave 6 grit; the high-concentration profile had a significant indirect association with grit through career preparation competency, whereas its direct association with grit was nonsignificant. These findings suggest that multicultural adolescents’ later grit is associated with maternal sociocultural resources through a time-lagged indirect association involving career preparation competency rather than through a direct association. Because the predictor and mediator were assessed at the same wave, these findings should be interpreted as evidence consistent with a longitudinally ordered indirect association rather than developmental mediation. The study proposes that career support policies for multicultural families be designed as a multilevel approach that combines strengthening maternal resources with promoting adolescents’ career preparation competency.
