This study examines the use and scope of terms in CJK and Western countries regarding the concept of rare books and their categories. Besides, the historical criteria of rare books and the yearly distribution of the Rare Book Collection in the National Library of Korea are reviewed. The research found that the terms “rare books” in CJK were used with the most similar meanings; Gojeok, GoJeonjeok, and Goseo. These terms included the character used, the publishing method like a hand-written manuscript or printed materials, the binding method, and the publication date. The books published before 1910 were identified as rare books with the study on movable-type and the practices of the libraries in the 1960s. After that, the catalogue rule was followed by applying the same criteria. Thus “Munheon” is expanding into a term meaning the general information contained not only in record media of the past but in digital materials, where the term “Gomunheon” as a retrospective meaning is being used as a concept encompassing rare books, historical maps, and manuscripts. Furthermore, in connection with the management of rare books at the National Library of Korea, the administrative changes, registration standards, and regulations regarding rare books were investigated. The catalogue records of the actual collections of rare books were analyzed to compare and review the yearly trends. As a result, 24.2% of the collections dating from 1911 to 1945 are occupied by the National Library of Korea’s rare books, confirming the need to discuss the standard period of the rare documents in the future.
