초록

The purpose of this study was to examine the awareness of male and female office workers in Seoul and some of the provinces(Yeosu and Suncheon) about cosmetic surgery and the state of their cosmetic surgery by age group, educational attainment, monthly family income and occupation, their opinions on an ideal external appearance, their recognition of cosmetic surgery as a way to have an ideal appearance and the state of their cosmetic surgery as a means to do that. It's basically meant to raise the right awareness of appearance and an ideal appearance, to grasp the reality of cosmetic surgery, to resolve problems caused by indiscreet cosmetic surgery, to provide accurate knowledge and information on cosmetic surgery and ultimately to help consumers have the right understanding of cosmetic surgery, which is part of the beauty industry. First, as for satisfaction level with appearance, every age group believed that appearance was important for social life, but they weren't satisfied a lot with their own appearance. Second, regarding advertising credibility about cosmetic surgery, none of the age groups put much confidence in cosmetic surgery ads. As for the reason, exaggerated ads were cited as the biggest reason, followed by indiscreet ads by hospitals. Third, concerning the reality of cosmetic surgery, the biggest group of the company employees who underwent cosmetic surgery answered they did that because they weren't confident about their looks. Fourth, concerning experience of side effects and matters requiring special attention, the number of the office workers who experienced side effects was relatively small. The findings of the study are expected to step up the development of cosmetic surgery by providing hospitals with information on people's awareness of cosmetic surgery, reality of it, motivation for having cosmetic surgery, hospital choice and information acquisition.
