초록
Considering the growing awareness of significance of paratext in translated books, this paper suggests to apply the results of research on text-itself translation to the title translation which is one kind of paratext. Picture books for younger children have distinctive characteristics of being read aloud by adults rather than children reading the books themselves. Speakability of text-itself is an important factor, however, the speakability of the title which can attract the reader on first sight will be an important factor as well. This paper will focus on onomatopoeias and mimetic words that work as one of devices that enhance speakability. 825 titles of English- Korean translated picture books were categorized into three types–transliteration/literal translation, deletion, adaptation/addition. It is recommended that translators employ an unique way in using onomatopoeias and mimetic words when they translate picture book titles to enhance speakability for the readers, causing them to read aloud in a more dynamic and pleasant way. Although there are limitations and imprecisions when deciding whether a word can be considered an onomatopoeia or a mimetic word, both in English and Korean, this study aims to figure out the significance of consideration on title translation that increase the speakability by means of using onomatopoeias and mimetic words, which are more abundant in Korean than in English, while retaining the meaning or tone of the title in source text.
