김석범의 『화산도』에 나타난 도스토옙스키 문학의 영향과 변주 2 - 인물, 혐오, 니힐리즘을 중심으로 -

초록

This article examines the intertextual relationship between Kim Seok-beom’s epic novel Hwasando and Dostoevsky’s major novels, focusing on character, hatred, and nihilism. It argues that the modes of characterization and emotional depiction elaborated in Dostoevsky’s novels—such as Crime and Punishment, Demons, and The Brothers Karamazov—are creatively transformed and reconfigured in Hwasando. Characterization, together with the modes of emotional expression manifested through hatred and nihilism, constitutes a key affinity between the two authors’ literary worlds. The main arguments of this article are as follows. First, a close intertextual relationship can be identified between Kim Sok-pom’s epic novel Hwasando and Dostoevsky’s major novels in terms of characterization, psychology, affective dispositions, and attitudes. Second, the characterization in Hwasando transforms the duality and psychological complexity of characters in Dostoevsky’s fiction. Third, unlike the hatred and revulsion depicted in Dostoevsky’s works, which arise from physiological disgust and ontological anxiety, hatred in Hwasando is articulated within the concrete historical context of the Jeju April 3 Incident. Fourth, the nihilism that frequently appears in Hwasando differs from the atheistic and anti-authoritarian nihilism of Dostoevsky’s novels; rather, it is presented as an attitude that must be overcome in the face of the historical reality of massacre.
