This study investigates the structural effects of key political psychological variables on foreign policy preferences, focusing on ‘militant internationalism’ (MI) — a belief in the desirability and utility of using military force — and ‘cooperative internationalism’ (CI), which emphasizes collaboration with the international community and multilateral institutions. The analysis assesses how these orientations shape perceptions of the North Korean nuclear threat and support for South Korea’s nuclear armament. Utilizing face-to-face survey data from a nationally representative sample, the hypotheses were statistically tested. Results indicate that individuals with stronger MI are more likely to perceive the North Korean nuclear threat as severe, worry about its impact on their lives, and judge the overall situation as more serious. However, contrary to expectations, MI did not increase specific attentiveness to the North Korean nuclear issue, and CI did not significantly influence any aspect of threat perception or overall evaluation. Consistent with theoretical expectations, stronger MI is associated with firmer support for nuclear armament policies. While CI is linked to reduced support for independent nuclear weapons development, this effect diminishes as perceptions of the North Korean threat intensify.
