초록

This paper reviews problems when college students attempt to read a literary genre of novel by the Problem-Based Learning pedagogy. Learners are expected to encounter many possible answers rather than a single one while they solve the given ill-structured problem regarding their reading of literary works. Learners re-reads and tries to comprehend the text while considering that how to understand the text is more beneficial and productive than their previous readings. In a literary genre, a novel consists of many components such as author, theme, character, storyline, style, and other textual and atextual sources. Such complexity confuses learners as to how to define the literary genre of novel in an academic and general way. Unlike the past, learners will be wondered how to read novel better in an age of multiculturalism and globalism when literary canons are challenged and rethought. In the course, “Genre of Modern Korean Novel,” learners study various genre theories during the first eight weeks. And then, they attempted to apply these theoretic frames to the literary texts during the second half of the course. As a result, learners can have opportunities to think over why the (Western) novel theories are required to understand the modern Korean fiction works and how the content and form of each text embodies the overall world of the genre, novel.
