The purpose of this study is to illustrate the aesthetic characteristics of Ai Qing's poems, especially focusing on his pre-1949 works, almost one hundred ninety seven time-honored poems. In this period Ai Qing establishes a poetic trend that is his own and which he maintains more or less before the year 1949. While portraying a full of his sincere and guileless sympathy for the lowly and the oppressed, his poetry demonstrate to Chinese people the difficulties and hardship they are facing. At the same time, he presents their suffering scenes of everyday life, dramatizing them and finding interest in humble and ordinary activity. This study also focuses on analysing three aesthetic characteristics that appear in Ai Qing's poems, and therefore contains three parts, together with introduction and conclusion. Part One explores his unique poetic concept that poetry must have truth, goodness, and beauty, and moreover these three aesthetics should be unified in the poetry. Part Two examines his second aesthetic characteristic that poetry should emphasize concrete imagery, never look for the abstruse, through which poetry can achieve a successful shape. Part Three analyze his third aesthetic characteristic that poetry should convey the spirit of the times. Furthermore, poetry should embody the sorrow of Chinese people, and the convergence of poet's personal feelings and national spirit is his high ideal of being the model poetry.
