초록

This study investigated the parental images of North Korean female refugees using a metaphor analysis during their period in the Hanawon. We collected data from 254 North Korean female refugees who had entered and stayed in South Korea for no longer than three months. They were asked by filling in the statement “Parents are ____, because ____.” We analyzed the collected metaphors and categorized them into 7 types of parental images. The most frequent type was describing parents as those who had to be a role model, which was followed by those who took care and responsibility, who the child could rely on, who made sacrifice, who secure stability, and who had love and warmness, a friend and a person who had lots of faults. North Korean female refugees tended to place more emphasis on the instrumental aspect of parenting than on the emotional aspect, which somewhat reflected the difference in how North Koreas perceived parents from South Koreans. Based on the findings, we tried to provide implications on the development of a customized parenting education program for North female refugees.
