This study analyzes aspects of the Korean Wave and K-culture in Japan, and changes that have occurred over the past 20 years, and the results can be summarized as follows. In Japan, the original Korean Wave started with video content such as dramas and movies and the enhancement of the profile of actors, and subsequently the second period was comprised of popular musical products and was promoted by various K-pop and other musical performers. Finally, the third period of the Korean wave was kindled on the basis of the expansion of new communication channels such as SNS that are enjoyed by Japanese teenagers and people in their 20s, as a form of cultural consumption that is different from that of the older generation in Japan. At the same time, the aggressive Korean Wave, in which various companies collaborated, succeeded in breaking into new consumer markets such as Europe, the Americas and the Middle East, rather than targeting only Asia, large parts of which are prejudiced against Korea. In addition, it seems that internet searches for ‘K’ phenomena rose rapidly during the 2nd and the 3rd periods. Furthermore, this study finds that as of 2022, the Korean Wave is no longer a social phenomenon that is unique to Japan, so the term ‘K Wave’ is now more frequently used throughout the media during this 4th period. In addition, it is clear that not only forms of popular culture such as video content, K-pop, webtoons and books, but also everyday consumer goods in sectors such as food, beauty and fashion, are receiving global attention. Through this study, it can be seen that the Korean government and a variety of companies have made efforts to develop a wider market on the basis of the success of and reaction to the Korean Wave in Japan from the 1st to the 3rd periods. Currently, it can be argued that, on the basis of this success, Korean culture and media have become more important from an economic perspective, rather than as factors in the political relationship between Korean and Japan.
