초록

This paper examines the rites and music performed in the state funeral of Emperor Gojong which was conducted in Japanese style. Emperor Gojong’s state funeral was held for about a month in Shinto style in which every rite was accompanied with music drawing distinctions from the traditional state funeral of Joseon. The music performed in the state funeral are gagaku and the westernized Japanese military music. Gagaku, the symbol of the Japanese imperial household, was the most appropriate music for the service to the State Shinto which displayed clearly the change in the style of a funeral from that of the Buddhism, with the westernized military music revealing the aspect of modern state that Japan had claimed to be. Gagaku was performed by the musicians sent from Japan of the Imperial Court Music Orchestra and Gyeongseong Shinto Shrine, and the Japanese military music was performed by the naval band, the western music band of the Royal Music Institute of Yi Household, and the trumpeters of the army and navy honor guards. The music was organized as the same form as in the state funeral carried out in Japan throughout the starting of the funeral procession, beginning with the Japanese military music followed by gagaku and closing with Japanese military music. The Japanese music performed in this state funeral played its role to give auditive impression that the Emperor Gojong’s funeral was one of the Japanese imperial family’s or the Japanese vassal of merit’s. The Emperor Gojong’s state funeral in Japanese style is found to have corresponded to that of Japan in all aspects including the Japanese imperial order, authorities, rites and specific procedures, organization of the funeral cortege, the types of music, instruments and the music bands dispatched. This certainly reveals the fact that the Japanese empire intended to realize the ‘Korea and Japan are one-policy’ even in the ‘funeral’ of the Korean emperor by reproducing the Japanese state funeral in Korea.
