This study examines the hatred, prejudice, concealment and awakening of identity, and resistance depicted in Kim Sok-bom’s epic novel, “Volcanic Island,” in the context of the dynamic relationship between islands and the mainland. This to reinterpret “Volcanic Island” by focusing on its setting being Jeju and exploring the conflict between mainlanders and islanders. “Volcanic Island” vividly portrays the mutual rejection and contempt between mainlanders and islanders and the islanders’ resistance. The Jeju 4.3 Incident, which is dealt with in “Volcanic Island,” has a multi-layered context that cannot be fully captured by ideological factors alone. This great historical tragedy must be interpreted primarily in terms of the conflict between the mainland and island. In “Volcanic Island,” the punitive forces and Northwest Youth Association, who come to the island to suppress the Jeju 4.3 Incident, do not view the Jeju residents as fellow humans. They perceive the Jeju people with contempt and disgust. This attitude leads to horrific massacres. The Jeju people, in turn, traditionally reject and hate outsiders from the mainland, referring to them as “Landlubber.” In “Volcanic Island,” the Jeju people’s response to the hatred towards them is divided into two attitudes: denial of their identity as Jeju islanders and search for an autonomous resistance. Lee Bang-geun, who remains in Jeju until the end, symbolizes the pride and subjectivity of the Jeju people. “Volcanic Island,”which captures the literary origins of the conflicts and confrontations of our time, should be continuously reinterpreted.​
