초록

This study examines the relationships among balance of power, political similarities, and military cooperation in Northeast Asia. Using diverse data on regional states for the period from 1950 to 2000, this study statistically analyzes international relations theories such as balance of power theory, power preponderance theory, power transition theory, and democratic peace theory. This study provides empirical evidence that imbalance of power, military cooperation and political similarities, military cooperation reinforce each other and that such IR theories are applicable to Northeast Asia. Based on the empirical findings, this study claims that more thorough discussions and efforts are necessary among international relations scholars and policy makers on the issue of cooperation in Northeast Asia and that policies relating to the preponderance of power and spread and consolidation of democracy are more actively pursued. In formulating such policies, military and political issues should be addressed to ensure peace and stability in the region.
