The texts and pictures in picture books may be interpreted differently so that they are fun. The texts in such picture books are language text that explains content and meaning. The pictures are visual text that delivers story with images using diverse materials, techniques, and expression methods. The recent trend in prize-winning picture books at international children’s book fair is the expansion of illustration, namely expression and role of the pictures. Illustrations deliver diverse meanings so that the picture books try out diversification of relationship between texts and pictures. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to analyze the role of illustrations in picture books as iconotext which is a reciprocal the third text rather than to see pictures and texts are independent sign system. Through this, I would establish the ground of iconotext’s continuous change and evolution as complex sigh system rather than the texts and pictures are developed as independent signs. Moreover, I would further establish a chance to infer the direction of communication through relationship between texts and pictures. For the scope and methodology of this research, I tried to analyze the relationship between texts and pictures in current picture books in the aspect of iconotext so that I chose the prize-winning books of Ragazzi Awards at Bologna International Children’s Book Fair. Among the prize-winning books, I analyzed Korean artists’ works from 2004to 2012. I implement data survey at domestic and international publication contents related institutions,network searching, survey on separate book volumes,sample survey and literature search on related researches or publications. This research analyzes the relationship between texts and pictures in picture books in the aspect of iconotext as the third sign system. Diverse expressional methods and delivery of meaning are researched in the aspect of creative artistic expression using illustrations that are pictures. Therefore, the diverse roles and communication methods of illustrations in picture books should get expansion of artistic meaning and try out of fusion with diverse sign systems as complex sign system rather than mere relationship of texts and pictures.
