This study examines the stereotyping and othering of North Korean defectors in South Korean media and its impact on their perceptions and daily lives. Through in-depth interviews with long-term resident defectors, the study explores their perspectives on North Korea-related content in broadcasts and YouTube videos, identifying key areas for improvement. Findings indicate that defectors perceive such content as sensationalized and primarily tailored for South Korean audiences. Many express concerns over exaggerated and distorted portrayals, which foster distrust and caution. In particular, they reject depictions of defectors as pitiable and ignorant outsiders, as well as the portrayal of assimilated individuals, such as the submissive female conforming to South Korean norms. Moreover, media narratives that overlook the diverse motivations behind defection and the evolving socio-cultural landscape of North Korea reinforce stereotypes, leading to negative perceptions. Defectors advocate for media representations that reflect their diversity and individuality rather than reinforcing homogenized narratives. They also express a preference for programs that highlight the lives of North Korean residents rather than focusing solely on defectors. These findings highlight the need for a critical reassessment of broadcasting’s role in supporting defectors’ integration into South Korean society and fostering reunification discourse. Additionally, they underscore the importance of improving media representations of North Korea and its defectors to promote a more accurate and nuanced understanding.
