‘Free learning semester system’ is a new education policy that is gaining a lot of attention and will be more actively enforced. This paper is a philosophical study on one of the primary objectives of free learning semester, “self-understanding”, with focus on Charles Taylor’s concept. This paper presents the findings of the following three analyses. First, the nature of self-understanding was analyzed through the good practices and teacher’s guidebook on free learning semester. Second, Taylor’s concept of self was analyzed to build the framework needed to examine free learning semester philosophically. Taylor’s nature of self is relational and moral. Third, the effect of free learning semester on the learner’s self-understanding was analyzed based on Taylor’s concept of self. As a result, it turned out that the free semester helps students understand the personality of the relational self, but is insufficient to understand the personality of the moral self.
