초록

The purpose of this study is to diagnose the causes of the crisis in democracy at a global level and explore alternatives that can overcome the crisis in Korea. The results of the inquiry are summarized as follows: First, the general factor in the global democratic crisis is the nation-state’s failure to actively respond to economic globalization, but the democratic crisis in Korea intensified as political forces did not try to resolve social conflicts but instead instigated unrealistic conflicts for acquisition of power. Second, today's crisis of democracy is divided into new authoritarianism and populism, but it is common in that it shows a ‘power politics’ behavior in which the ruling forces or the majority of the people unilaterally exercise power. Power politics amplifies political polarization, deepening the democratic crisis. Third, this study considered the limitations of existing solutions to overcome the democratic crisis. The state-led solution to resolve economic polarization by cash injection has proven to strengthen citizens’ dependence on the state, thereby weakening democracy.
