초록
The DMZ (Demilitarized Zone), a key symbol of the East Asian Cold War, has been predominantly represented in two modes: security tourism centered on ideological conflict or reconciliation, and eco-tourism emphasizing environmental preservation. Popular films typically depict the DMZ as a metaphor for inter-Korean division, staging either conflict or humanistic reconciliation. Recent documentaries, by contrast, foreground the region’s flora and fauna to promote ecological peace, yet they often remain anthropocentric by treating nonhuman beings as objects of eco-tourism or symbols of peace. This article examines DMZ documentaries that articulate nonhuman witnessing as a relational process, moving beyond these binary modes of representation. In doing so, it proposes these documentaries as an alternative narrative and aesthetic that depict Cold War history through nature, spectral archives, nonhuman witnessing, and diffractive reading.
