The Parallel Mediation Effects of Ethical Sensitivity in the Relationship between Child Counselor’s Developmental Level and Self-Efficacy in Ethical Practice

The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effect of ethical sensitivity in the relationship between child counselors’ developmental level and ethical practice self-efficacy, and to explore the parallel multiple mediating effects of the subdimensions of ethical sensitivity. Data were collected using the Korean Counselor Level Questionnaire (KCLQ), the Korean Counselor’s Ethical Sensitivity Scale (K-CESS), and the Ethical Practice Self-Efficacy Scale for Counselors (EPSES-C). The data were analyzed using SPSS 25.0, and parallel mediation analysis was conducted with PROCESS Macro Model 4 (Hayes, 2013). The results indicated that first, child counselors’ developmental level was positively correlated with ethical practice self-efficacy, overall ethical sensitivity, and all subdimensions of ethical sensitivity. Second, ethical sensitivity partially mediated the relationship between developmental level and ethical practice self-efficacy. Third, among the subfactors of ethical sensitivity, recognition of ethical issues and use of professional consultation showed significant specific indirect effects. The findings are meaningful in that they exploratively identified functional differences among the subfactors of ethical sensitivity. Furthermore, this study provides foundational implications for ethics education, supervision, and counselor training programs aimed at strengthening the ethical competencies of child counselors.
