This study used the BIGKinds news big data system to analyze changes in social and policy discussions regarding the basic academic skills support policy and students needing learning support. The purpose was to identify trends and changes over time in keywords related to basic academic skills that appeared in media reports from 1990 to the first half of 2023, and to derive policy implications and future development directions. Using the BIGKinds system, news articles focused on keywords like “basic academic skills” were collected, and yearly keyword and trend analyses were performed. Word cloud visualization was also used to analyze related words and identify changes in media reports during major policy implementations. The study confirmed that media interest significantly increased during key periods such as the introduction of the Basic Academic Skills Guarantee Act and related policy announcements. Notably, after the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted declining basic academic skills, related news reports increased again. Through this analysis, the development process of the basic academic skills policy and shifts in social interest were identified, allowing for predictions of future policy improvement directions.
