Even though Dewey seems to be raising a strong critique of Hegel in the later stages, it is a short-sighted view to underestimate the philosophical influence of Hegel on Dewey. One of the important sources to prove this fact is Dewey’s “Lectures in China”. This study examines the following contents, focusing on “Lectures in China”. First, Dewey argues that Hegel’s political philosophy has made a positive contribution in the context of criticizing ‘individualistic liberalism’. In “Lectures in China”, Dewey strongly criticizes Locke’s liberalism, seeing that ‘classical liberalism’ is closely related to John Locke’s thought, and is actively considering Hegel’s political philosophy as an alternative. In addition, Dewey’s discussion of emphasizing individual suffrage and a life in solidarity in “Lectures in China” has the potential to establish a positive relationship with the basic spirit of Hegel’s political philosophy. Dewey’s position, emphasizing the importance of suffrage among other rights, in terms of the exercise of rights, is closely related to Hegel’s political philosophical viewpoint, which emphasizes concrete freedoms in reality, and this is why Dewey describes Hegel as a great actualist. Based on the above, there is room for more active interpretation of the relationship between Dewey’s and Hegel’s philosophy from the point of view of political philosophy after the middle period. On the surface, Dewey seems to criticize the viewpoint of unilaterally subordinating the individual to the state and worries that Hegel’s political philosophy could have such an interpretation. At the same time, Dewey points out the problem of liberalism that tries to separate the individual from the community, and considers Hegel’s political philosophy as an alternative to overcome this problem. Therefore, Dewey’s own statement that Hegel’s legacy remains in Dewey’s own philosophy after the middle ages should also be understood in this context.
