This study examined the characteristics of William Elliot Griffis’s (1843~1928) correspondences relating to Korea, preserved in the Archives at Rutgers University, and analyzed the relationship between Griffis and Korea. In addition, digital humanities projects about the correspondences were studied, and the collection of Griffis’s correspondences was visualized. Griffi s wrote Corea, the Hermit Nation (1882), Corea, Without and Within (1885), Th e Unmannerly Tiger and Other Korean Tales (1911), A Modern Pioneer in Korea : The Life Story Of Henry G. Appenzeller (1912), Korean Fairy Tales (1922) among others. His works were considered very important for understanding Korea. Although Griffi s visited Korea only in 1927, he wrote many books on Korea and needed much information for his writing activities. Th e Griffi s Collection shows how he collected data about Korea. Griffis’s correspondences included exchanges with missionaries, Japanese authorities, and Koreans in Korea during the late 19th century and the early 20th. Th rough this, it is confi rmed that Griffi s interacted with signifi cant fi gures in modern Korean history, like Horace Newton Allen, Henry Appenzeller, Homer B. Hulbert, Philip Jaisohn and Syngman Rhee.
