The Effect of Coach's Communication Style on Sports Motivation: The Mediating Effect of Trust in Coach

초록

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of coach’s communication style on athletes’sports motivation and the mediating effect of trust in coach. Of 403 questionnaires from basketball players registered with the Korea Basketball Association, 400 valid responses were retained and randomly split for EFA (n=197) and CFA/SEM (n=203). The SMS-K was validated as a two-factor structure of competence pursuit (6 items, α=.841, AVE=.584) and amotivation (4 items, α=.932, AVE=.779). Model fit was acceptable (CFI=.973, TLI=.961, RMSEA=.071, SRMR=.065). Commanding and lecturing positively predicted sports motivation (β=.260, p<.05), whereas non-accepting listening negatively predicted it (β=-.268, p<.01). Accepting listening positively predicted trust in coach (β=.364, p<.001), and trust fully mediated the relationship between accepting listening and sports motivation (β=.206, 95% CI[.051, .361]). These findings suggest that building trust through accepting communication is essential for enhancing athletes’ sports motivation.
