Statistical learning refers to the ability to extract and acquire regularities from the environment implicitly. It is categorized into adjacent and non-adjacent learning. Previous studies have reported that non-adjacent statistical learning is closely related to the processing of relative clauses. This study aimed to examine the relationship between non-adjacent statistical learning ability and the processing of English object relative clauses among Korean learners of English. Participants completed a non-adjacent statistical learning task and a self-paced reading task involving English object relative clauses as well as sentences with various other structures. Our results showed that reaction times in the non-adjacent statistical learning task were significantly positively correlated with processing times in multiple segments of the object relative clauses. In contrast, accuracy on the statistical learning task did not correlate significantly with sentence processing measures. These findings provide evidence that non-adjacent statistical learning plays an important role in second language relative clause processing and highlight the contribution of experimental evidence from Korean learners of English.
