This study attempts to identify changes in newspaper coverage of companion animals in terms of main frames and other news reports practices depending on three time stages: early stage(~ until 2009), transition stage(2010~2015), and mature stage(since 2016 ~). The data are derived from a content analysis of 344 companion animal related articles from 2004 to 2018. Three newspapers were used in this analysis: Chosun Ilbo, Joongang Ilbo, and Kyunghyang Shinmun. The results show that as we approach to the mature stage, the number of coverage of overall companion animals has been greatly increased compared to that of individual animals (ex. dog, cat). In addition, the average article size has been increased at least two times in the mature stage relative to the early stage. The sources have been diversified and the number of balanced articles have been increased. In the mature stage, it was more likely to deal with the animals in terms of co-existence with the people rather than a dependent relation with the people. Although this study found overall positive changes in the coverage, there still are strong tendencies that animals are treated having economic and industrial values and necessary for human interests.
