초록

This paper examines the characteristics and key points of the first published journal, The Theatre during the formative period of theatre studies and theatre criticism, in what might be considered the preparatory period for theatre journals, setting as this period 1950- 1960. The Theatre was the first published professional theatrical journal after the liberation of the Korea. The Theatre established the role of an academic journal for theater not only by publishing the contents of an academic thesis and collecting modern references, but also including contemporary voices and creating theoretical classifications. In particular, by surfacing important issues as they happened, and further through its critical perspective on and efforts to formulate theories about those contemporary issues, the journal differentiated its approach from those taken before Korean liberation.
