초록

This paper seeks to examine the Sino-Vietnamese War of February 1979 not only in the current context but also from the viewpoint of the historical relations between the two countries. The immediate causes were territorial issues and border disputes, expulsion of the Chinese in Vietnam, friendly relations between the Soviet Union and Vietnam, and Vietnamese invasion of Cambodia in December 1978. From a broad perspective, however, the incidents above served only as catalysts; actually, the was originated in conflicts of interest between China - pursued the traditional Sinocentric world order - and Vietnam, which would stand against China. There was neither victor nor vanquished in this war since the conflict was resolved in favor of neither side. China and Vietnam normalized their diplomatic relations in 1991; historically and geopolitically, however, there is every possibility that the unresolved issues between the two countries will come to the fore whenever the times change. It is difficult to predict how these circumstances will develop.
