버틀러의 ‘수행적 패러디’ 개념으로 본 매튜 본의 무용극 ‘백조의 호수’와 ‘호두까기 인형’ 분석 - 청소년 무용 감상 교육을 위한 이해 -

Abstract

본 논문은 주디스 버틀러(Judith Butler, 1956)의 ‘수행적 패러디(Performative parody)’ 개념을 적용하여 매튜 본의 뮤지컬 발레인 ‘백조의 호수(Swan Lake)’와 ‘호두까기 인형(Nutcracker)’작품을 분석함으로써 청소년 시청각 수업으로서의 교육적 함의를 논의 하는데 본 연구의 목적을 두었다. 매튜 본의 작품의 특성은 기발한 상상력을 바탕으로 기존 사회의 불평등과 편견들에 관한 문제들을 예술적 공간을 통해 풍자적으로 다루고 있다는 점이다. 이는 청소년들로 하여금 자연스럽게 사회 문제에 관한 비판적 시각을 제공한다는 측면에서 교육적 의미가 있다. 본 논문의 비평적 준거 틀인 버틀러의 ‘수행적 패러디’(performative parody) 이론 역시 사회적 보편성이 갖는 문제들을 쟁점화 시키고 있다는 측면에서 매튜 본의 작품을 분석하는데 상호 공통된 영역에서의 논의적 전개가 가능하였다. 먼저 백조의 호수 작품은 젠더(gender) 측면에서 논의 될 수 있었다. 여성을 대신한 남성 백조의 등장은 여성과 남성의 성이 가지는 특권적 이미지와 편견을 벗어나 수행적으로 새롭게 재구성되는 성을 표현하고 있어 버틀러의 수행적 패러디가 지닌 젠더 구성의 측면에서 비교 논의 될 수 있었다. 이는 보편적 성에 의문을 제기 하는 작업으로 자연적 ‘성’이란 사회적으로 분류되거나 특권화 된 것이라는 사실을 문제 제기하고 논의의 쟁점으로 삼는다. 둘째, 호두까기 인형의 경우 크게 사회적 권력과 욕망의 발현에 관한 지향성을 중심으로 버틀러의 수행성을 적용, 고찰할 수 있었다. 자신에게 주어진 환경을 극복하는 주인공들의 주체적 자각과 실천은 버틀러가 주장하는 ‘부정에서 긍정’이라는 역전 적 이행으로 권력으로부터의 억압은 오히려 욕망의 발현을 실행 시킬 수 있는 전치된 장소라는 긍정의 측면으로 논의될 수 있었다.

This study aims to discuss the educational implications by analyzing Matthew Bourne’s musical ballets Swan Lake and Nutcracker, applying Judith Butler’s concept of ‘performative parody.’ The results of a study based on the above purpose are summarized as follows: First, the work Swan Lake could be discussed in terms of gender. Since the appearance of male swans instead of female ones expresses the gender, reconstituted performatively, breaking away from the privileged images and prejudices of female and male genders, it could be compared and discussed in terms of gender construction of Butler’s performative parody. This is a work that raises a question about the universal sex, which brings up a problem and makes an issue for a discussion out of the fact that natural ‘sex’ has been something socially classified or privileged. Second, in Nutcracker, this study could apply and discuss Butler’s performativity, centering around directivity broadly to the expressions of social power and desire. The independent awakening and practice of the protagonists who overcome the environment that has been given to them correspond to the paradoxical transitivity ‘from negativity to positivity’ on which Butler insists, which could be discussed as a positive aspect that suppression from the power is a displaced place which can rather put the expression of desire into action.
