The purpose of this study was to examine the correlation among body fat ratio, blood pressure, blood lipids and cognition related variables in obese elderly women. Fifty two elderly women aged 65 and over with over 30% of body fat percentage were selected as research subjects. Through pearson's correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis, this study showed negative association between body fat ratio and cognition related variables (plasma glutamate level, cognitive score by MMSE-K). A negative relationship was also observed between systolic blood pressure (SBP) and cognition related variables, but not substantial association with blood lipids such as total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). Also this research had been identified SBP as an independent predictive factor for cognition variables. Our findings suggest that body fat loss and maintenance of normal blood pressure have a positive influence on cognitive function in obese elderly women. Furthermore, long term regular exercise and proper diet mediation have been shown to be useful in the prevention of cognitive problems such as dementia and cognitive impairment.-
