- Abstract
- An Analysis of Kurt Jooss' 「The Green Table」, this paper researched the characteristics of his work to understand his expressive arts through observing his political, social choreography background and implicit disposition of dance.
The three features of Jooss' 「The Green Table」 are: the expression of historical circumstances through social background, individualistic use of expressionism in both characters' role and movement, and the organization and directing effect.
The 「Green Table」 objectively expressed Germany's wartime crisis and the heightened tension within the country.
Jooss accentuated theatrical trait in each character's facial expression to uniquely deliver satirical and theatrical style. Movements also employed individualistic approach that composed of unique movements made to fit each character's personality. He used playful and gentle tango style of piano melody for music, which was marked by unbalanced rhythm, dissonance and sensational music techniques. Such genre deliberately conveyed the unstable and anxious background of the period as well as human nature's internal duplicity.
Masks and simple costumes played an important role in accentuating universality and symbolism of his work. Moreover, the dark lighting also emphasized the dramatic effect of the theme. These directing mechanisms both harmonized and strengthened all the factors of his work and made it not only a dance piece but also a composite work of art.
