dc.description.abstract | When a novel story is filmed, many parts become different from the original by the director`s taste. There is much of overt authorial mediacy from a narrator and outstanding psycho-narration in the filming process of Our Twisted Hero, written by Lee Munyeol. This study has the purpose to examine the questions of the intertextuality and the point of view in the filming process. In the filming work, some additional characters appear, who embody the theme of the story and show their rather recent figure from the past. This implies the theme that the past power relation and the attitude for power are continued to the present. The theme of the film is `liberty` and it is implied by props such as an empty cartridge, a coin on which the word `liberty` is carved and a pen. Generally cameras in a film has an external perspective so the things uttered by the narrator are transformed into an event. A film pays much attention to social real problems while a novel focuses on the mental states of the characters. In the filming process, the narrator`s metaphoric utterances or mental descriptions, which play an important role in the novel, are represented as visual images or characters` actions, and the narrator`s narrations implying the theme are transformed into voice-over narrations. When a quasi-autobiographical first-person narration novel such as Our Twisted Hero is filmed, the first person Voice over narration used may show the extension of space and a simultaneous representation of doubled spaces by adding a present narration to the past events or scene. So the relationship of scenes between past and present is emphasized. In the film, the point of view is focusing on the negative attitude for real world where a dictatorial power controls the world though years went by. This study suggests an approach or examination for the differences between novels and films in terms of narrative point of view. | - |
