- Abstract
- Ted Shawn's philosophy of dance art for male dancers paved the way for establishment dance department in education curriculum in American physical universities, through lecture and performance with pure passion and idea.
He choreographed works for male dancers. So he developed rhythmical dance action through exercise action and usual action.
Polonaise, Labor Symphony, and Fetish of his works were well reflected by his choreographic philosophy. His choreographic plan was arithmetic and scientific.
Specially, his choices of musics from ‘Polonaise' promoted active actions and visual effects for dancers. Also ’Labor Symphony' which was reflected the generation situation was realistic and actual.
He used aggressive and offensive actions in ‘Fetish' with religious deep colors.
In 1915~1931, Shawn leaded Denishawn school and Dance company which was the maternity ward of modern dance and the frist dance school.
According to his assertive theory, he taught dancers and choreographed his works in dancer's individual attainment. And he did his best to raise creative dancers.
Nowadays Shawn's influence which produced numerous famous dancers such as Matha Graham, Doris Humphrey, Chales Weidman converted history of dance.
As a dancer, choreographer and theorist, his achievement became the mainspring of activity in modern dance development.
