제19대 대통령선거에서 나타난 유권자 기본 심리특성의 영향 : 가치와 정치이데올로기를 중심으로

Abstract

본 연구는 유권자 정치선호 형성과 선택의 심리 과정에 대한 통합적 이해를 위해 제19대 대통령선거 후 실시된 설문조사 자료를 이용하여, 정치적 사고와 행동을 예측하는 기본 심리특성변인으로 슈워츠 개인 기본가치와 정치이데올로기의 관계와 정당과 후보 선택에 미치는 두 변인의 영향을 파악하고자 했다. 연구 결과 후 다음과 같은 사실을 확인했다. 첫째, 이론적으로 정치이데올로기 정향에 선행하는 것으로 상정되어 온 개인 기본가치는 정당일체감과 후보 선택에직접적 영향을 미치는 것으로 보기 어려운 반면에 후보 선택 집단과 정당선호 집단에 따른 정치이데올로기 정향 차이는 뚜렷한 것으로 드러났다. 특히, 진보 후보와 정당으로 인식되고 있는문재인과 더불어민주당 선호집단과 보수 후보와 정당으로 알려진 홍준표와 자유한국당 선호집단의 진보-보수 성향차가 매우 뚜렷하게 나타났으며 지난 제18대 대통령선거 후보 지지집단 간에도 이와 같은 결과가 나타났다. 둘째, 이번 선거에서 정치이데올로기 정향과 이와 밀접한 관련이있는 정당일체감은 사회경제변수와 출신지역을 통제한 McFadden 조건부 로짓 모형에서 후보선택에 독립적 영향을 미친 반면에 기본가치는 대체로 영향을 미치지 못한 것으로 드러났다. 셋째, 변화에 대한 개방, 보수, 자기초월, 자기고양 등의 상위차원 기본가치는 대체로 정당과후보 선택 집단 간에 차이가 없는 것으로 드러났다. 넷째, 사회경제 변수 중 세대는 정치이데올로기는 물론이고 가치와도 의미 있는 관계가 나타났다. 나이가 든 세대일수록 자신을 보수 정치성향으로 평가하고 있고, 보수 성향과 관련이 있는 보수 가치에 대한 지지도 높은 반면에 진보성향과 관련이 있는 변화에 대한 개방 가치에 대해서는 그 지지가 낮았다. 관찰 결과의 함의와한계를 논의하는 것으로 글을 맺는다.

This paper investigates the relationships between basic psychological characteristics and political choices in order to understand voters’ political preference formation process in an integrated approach. Using a nationally representative survey dataset collected after the 19th Korean presidential election in 2017, it attempts to identify the relationships between Schwartz’ basic personal values and ideological selfplacement and the influence of those basic psychological characteristics on party and candidate choices. The study finds that basic personal values, which have been suggested to predict one’s ideological self-placement, turned out not to influence his or her party identification or candidate choice directly while there was a stark ideological contrast among different party and candidate supporters. Specifically, there was even stronger ideological contrast between the supporters of Moon Jae-in and those of Hong Jun-pyo as well as between the supporters of Democratic Party and those of Liberty Korea Party. Moon and Democratic Party have been perceived as progressive while Hong and Liberty Korea Party as conservative. The study also finds that party identification influenced one’s candidate choice while basic personal values did not, according to McFadden conditional logit model estimation. There was no distinct contrast of such basic values as openness to change, conservatism, self-transcendence, and self-enhancement among different party and candidate supporters. Yet, it finds that older generations seem to perceive themselves as more conservative and subscribe conservatism more as basic personal values than younger generations do.
