Abstract
It is little wonder we can often find traces of various ideologies in the works of Korean proletarian literature. But this is not saying that those ideologies control the consciousness of writers of proletarian literature as established and organized forms. Nonetheless, they frequently appear in proletarian literature often conflicting with Marxism. A point that I am trying to make here is that by examining the traces of ideologies in proletarian literature, we can find a way to understand proletarian literature more profoundly. In my thought, one of the most representative ideologies is `Populism`. In particular, the populism found in the earliest proletarian literature and peasant literature provides a definite ground for my point. The purpose of this thesis is in examining various aspects of the populism found in Korean proletarian literature. For this end, I shortly examined the essential characteristics of populism through looking at Russian and American proletarian literature. And I also compared the utopianism of populism with that of fascism in order to understand what populism meant in times and places. It is in the area of literature that the first experiment of populism in Korea was done. And yet, the populism was one that wore a pseudo- Faust face. This can be easily confirmed by the negative influences that populism left on Korean literature. Therefore, it can be said that the critical approach of this thesis to Korean proletarian literature for identifying elements of populism is not only an effort to understand Korean proletarian literature in a new way, but also an effort of greater significance to bring a particular experience of modernity called populism into light.
