- Abstract
- This article presents the characteristics of French technocracy and technocrats during the inter-war period. In the historical context of the rising of the modernization movement after the First World War, various ideas and technocratic groups have emerged. Among these, the case of Ernest Mercier(1878-1955) and his organization, the ‘Redressement Français(RF)’, appears to be very unique and significant. By examining his discourses and activities in the RF, we can comprehend his ideals and vision for the construction of New France, as well as the gap between theory and practice. In spite of the failure in RF’s movement, the ideas of Ernest Mercier had been largely realized by the technocratic reformation of the 4th-5th Republic.
