- Abstract
- Many online applications recently start adopting multi-criteria ratings on products or services to help users make a better decision. In this paper, we develop new designs for movie search which incorporate the information on multiple features of a movie, e.g., story, action, direction, and visuals. The detailed information can be a useful resource for a user’s decision, but too much information would rather make information retrieval inefficient and lead to information overload. Therefore, to overcome this problem, we suggest to apply Visual Information Seeking (VIS) principles into the interface design. The new designs proposed in this paper include an interactive search tool and the visualization of the results. The paper details the advantages of the proposed design concepts and user studies show that users are more satisfied with the new designs than the text-based design of one current movie site in terms of effectiveness of the search.
