조선시대의 호남불교 연구의 성과와 전망

Abstract

조선시대 불교계는 고려시대와는 달랐지만 신앙을 중심으로 본연의 역할은 유지되었다. 지역 사회와 긴밀한 관계를 유지하며 운영되었던 조선 사원은 관련 자료도 적지 않게 남겼다. 조선 불교에 대한 연구는 이런 자료를 광범위하게 수집하고 정리하는데서 시작해야 한다. 조선전기에서 일제침략기에 이르는 사찰 수의 변화를 염두에 두면서 사원 유지 실태에 대한 실제 조사가 필요하다. 제도적으로 파악된 사찰 현황과 실상에 차이가 있을 가능성이 있기 때문이다. 이와 관련하여 일반인들에게 크게 영향을 미쳤던 승려들의 활동이 사찰의 성쇠와 연관이 있는지도 검토해야 한다. 16세기에 전국적으로 가장 왕성한 모습을 보였던 佛書 간행과 관련하여 현재 각 사찰 등에 전해 오는 佛典에 대한 종합 조사가 필요하다. 선초 양종으로 사찰을 정리할 때 한 곳밖에 지정받지 못했던 호남 지역 사찰에서 가장 많은 불서를 간행했던 이유와 배경은 무엇인지를 살펴봄으로써 지역불교의 현황에 대한 새로운 관점을 확보할 수 있다. 조선후기에 호남지역에서는 浮休系 문손들이 松廣寺를 터전으로 확고한 문파를 형성하였고, 淸虛系의 鞭羊派와 逍遙派가 大芚寺를 중심으로 묘향산파를 능가하는 형세를 이루었다. 그 배경으로 지적된 호남 지역의 경제적 충실이 정확한 것인지, 사원이 보다 왕성했던 영남 지역과의 비교 검토를 통해 해석해 보아야 한다. 栢庵性聰이 간행한 불서들과 履歷과정의 변화에 대한 교학적 분석과 三種禪 논쟁의 場을 마련했던 호남불교의 면모를 파악하는 것도 중요하다. 講學의 융성과 새로운 禪觀의 제창 등 핵심적인 불교사상의 과제가 전개되었던 호남지역 불교계의 위상에 대한 검토는 조선후기 불교의 자생력에 대한 평가와 연관되는 문제이다. 호남지역에서는 유배문화의 특성으로 인해 유불의 심도 깊은 만남에 대한 실제적 이해가 가능한데, 유학자들이 불교를 접한 후 사상의 변화가 보이는지에 관심을 가져야 한다. 호남지역의 義僧 水軍의 존재는 국가적 부담에 대한 불교계의 대응과 이에 관련된 사원 운영 등을 살필 수 있는 문제로서 이를 통해 호남 지역의 특성을 살필 수 있다. 조선시대 불교의 연구는 자료 확보가 일차적인 과제인데, 이는 지역 사회의 연구 인적 자원을 활용하여 이루어내야 한다. 지역 불교 연구 자료의 수집과 정리는 지역 문화의 특성을 알려주는 것이면서 조선시대 불교 상황을 이해하는데 중요한 자산이 된다. 조선불교의 중요 주제를 품고 있는 호남지역 자료의 수집과 분석이 갖는 의의가 여기에 있다.

In Joseon dynasty, differenf from Goryeo dynasty, the Buddhism maintained centering around belief. The monastries of Joseon dynasty connected with regional society, and some of their various records are remained now. The study on the Buddhism of Joseon dynasty start at gathering and arranging those records. The numbers of monasteries in Joseon dynasty were much changed. We should examine the real aspects of monastery numbers in this transition situation. With this point, we examine that either the active working monks are effected those numbers or not. In 16th century, the publication of Buddhism books was very popular. We should examine the books which handed down at so many monastries throughout the nation. In Honam region, only one monastery was appointed among 36 monastries in nation. So we find the reason that Honam monastries could publicated so many books. In late Joseon dynasty, Buhyu school monks founded a firm doctrinal school based on Songgwangsa, in other hand Pyeonyang and Soyo lineage of Cheongheo school prospered at Daedunsa. We should survey the reason why they were so active in Honam region, on the contrary monasteries of Yeongnam region were in more flourishing condition. Seongchong in Songgwangsa published many Buddhism books and they changed the Korean Buddhist learning course. Baekpa and Choeui made an argument about three kinds of Seon. They are the most notable themes of late Joseon dynasty Buddhism. Why they were made in Honam region? We should examine the basic ground of them. The meaning of these publishing and argument shows the situation in Buddhist work. And furthermore we can guide the autogenous power of Joseon Buddhism. In Honam region, the Confucianists met Buddhist profoundly because of their exile. We shoyld compare the Confucianists thought between before and after their exile who met Buddhist. The righteous navy was found only in Honam region along the coast. It can suggest the Buddhist's response to the national load and the management of monastries. Through this, we can survey thr characteristics of Honam Buddhism. The study on Joseon Buddhism depend on accumulating sources. This subject should performed by regional researchers. The gathering and arranging records can show the characteristic of regional culture. Also it can show the understanding of the circumstances of Joseon Buddhism. The Honam Buddhism contains most essential themes of Buddhism in Joseon dynasty. The significance of gathering and arranging Honam Buddhism records lie in this point.
