Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the association of bone mineral density and eating disorder in female ballet dancers. Female Ballet dancers(n=158) were participated in this study. The tendency of eating disorder observed by Anorexia Bulimia Inventory questionnaire(Stein & Jensen, 1995). Bone mineral density was measured by Quantitative Ultrasonography(QUS), and participants were classified as normal(T-score > -0.99: n=61) and osteopenia(T-score between -1.0 and -2.5: n=97) following WHO guidelines. Statistical analysis in Frequency analysis, Reliability analysis, Factor analysis(varimax), Analysis of Covariance(ANCOVA), were performed with adjustment of age, weight, career, regular or irregular of menstrual period, and age at menarche. All statistical procedures were performed by SPSS(Ver 18.0) windows. There was a significant differences on psychological anxiety between normal and osteopenia(p<.05), but there were no significant differences on depression, binge eating, weight loss, body satisfaction between two groups. In conclusion, bone mineral density may be partly effected on eating disorder in female ballet dancers and because of the relationship between eating disorder and depression, binge eating, weight loss and body satisfaction, psychological factors may strongly effect to eating disorder so it is necessary to establish psychological stability and balanced eating habits in female ballet dancers.
